So Wednesday at lunch, I went out to the fenced dog area of the yard and planted some more lettuce since it was supposed to rain overnight and the ducks absolutely destroyed my lettuce outside of the fence. They keep escaping and they just eat whatever they can find, they’re greedy and they gobble it up
And then after work I was pretty mad about the lettuce and I saw them all standing in a line trying to munch the little baby peas that are starting to come up in the bed I just planted a couple weeks ago with the potatoes. I realized that they’re gonna have to move to the new coop sooner rather than later or I will not be able to grow anything.
I made the last couple adjustments in the new coop that needed to be made. It needed a couple different screws and locks so I ran over to the hardware store quickly, got the stuff I needed, fixed it up then I moved it to where it needs to go. Luckily it’s on wheels and very cute. I filled it with the straw and hay that they use for bedding. I put a couple eggs in there so they know what to do with the nesting boxes then I moved their pool over and refilled it in their new area and I put the fence up. We got two new fences that hopefully will contain them a bit better cause they don’t have holes in them and they’re not stretched out from the snow and I tapped everything down with clips.
They did not want to go in the coop last night so I had to catch them individually to put them into the thing which was interesting.
We’ve had a warm sunny week and everything is greening up and coming alive. Its great to discover a bunch of the perennials I sneakily planted last fall have made it through the long winter.

Wintered over kale and baby spinach!

I sprinkled a bunch of bulk pasture seeds everywhere, since we’re supposed to get several days of rain in a row to water it all in for me. I planted pigeon peas, barley, swiss chard, clover, amaranth and buckwheat.
Lots of work to do in the garden this weekend and then in 2 weeks its prime seed starting weekend! I’m hoping to do the whole front lawn patch as a wildflower meadow. Its a super steep area that’s hard to mow so I think it would ideally just not be mowed all summer but in a cute intentional looking way. My neighbors love the huge flower patch we already have out there.
We’re about a month out from our chick/ duckling mail order due date as well.
This lady was sitting on the nest one morning this week when I let the ducks out and acting broody. I got really excited but then she hopped out with everyone else when I went into the shed to give the rabbits food and water. Hopefully having a space of their own in the new coop will seal the deal. Doesn’t she look like a mom? I think she can do it.
