Lots of projects, planting and blooming happening!
Got the new duck coop assembled and implemented with new metal fencing so they can’t escape and eat my plants

Planted a ton of cold weather crops from seed in between my garlic and against the dog fence.

These seeds and more! I’m trying to get through a bunch of old seed.

Unfortunately we had a death, Java (left) passed from natural causes. She was my oldest rabbit but they’re all getting up there in age so I’m just trying to make them as comfortable as possible.

The pasture seeds I sprinkled everywhere started to sprout, though I think most of them got eaten by our huge rodent population.

Finally getting some movement on my sweet potato starts. Moving them out by the end of May!

Threw more potatoes out and covered them with mulch and leaves. Need to hill them up a bit more with dirt and compost but SURPRISE the tractor isn’t working again even though we just got it back from the repair place ;n;

200 new strawberry plants added to the berry bed.

The rodent population has EXPLODED and I feel like I’m losing the war. I started setting traps under the duck coop at night and will continue until I feel like I’ve done some damage there. I also bought some rat traps for the creature who made itself a dug out under the bunny shed. I saw it out of the corner of my eye last night and I’m pretty sure its a big fat rat. Hanta virus isn’t going to get me.
They completely chewed down all the cold weather starts I brought outside to acclimate. All my cabbages ;n;
It’s an interesting conundrum because I refuse to put out poison (it’s ecologically devastating!) but that really limits my options of pest control to – manual warfare (traps and physical blocks). Someone suggested a barn cat but I’m not sure I can get on board with that at this time. We have a lot of predators, I would worry for the cats safety. I don’t think I’m at a place where I can comfortably add another creature to my routine. I also worry about the cat impacting local bird populations, as outdoor cats tend to do. It’s not like I can tell the cat to only catch mice. I mean, I can, but I don’t think it will lead to results.

Potato/ peas bed is coming along handsomely. We’re going to be buried in peas by the end of May if things keep progressing this way. I can’t wait! Tried my hand at homemade trellising. It’ll do.

Swimming in eggs! Tried out an egg bread recipe that uses 10 eggs. Turned out pretty good, soft and dense crumb with a crunchy crust almost like a pretzel bread. I definitely want to add more salt to the crust next time I make it.

Spring cold weather seeds coming up. Here comes the brassica parade!

One of the currant cuttings I planted is flowering!

Started the rest of my warm weather seeds inside!

Our wild violets are abundant this year! I’m holding off mowing the yard until their seeds are set. (Not that I can mow with the tractor broken anyway…. Let’s pretend I’m doing No Mow May and make it intentional)

Looking forward to->
